Arshdeep steams in from over the wicket to Conway, good length on off, defended calmly into the covers. New Zealand start cautiously in this big decider.
Arshdeep is right on the money in his first over. He starts with a tight line, conceding just a single before Conway opens his account with a crisp boundary through cover. Another single follows, but then comes the breakthrough, Nicholls plays half-heartedly at a good-length ball, gets an inside edge, and the stumps are rattled. A golden duck, and India strike early in the decider.
What a start for India! Harshit Rana strikes with his very first ball. Conway pokes uncertainly outside off, the edge flies low but safe into Rohit Sharma’s hands at first slip. Two wickets in two overs, and New Zealand are suddenly in serious trouble in this series decider.
A tight, disciplined over keeps the pressure on New Zealand. Young finds a boundary to relieve some tension, but the rest of the over is well controlled by India’s bowlers. Mitchell struggles to get going, and NZ move cautiously to 16/2, still searching for stability after early blows.
Another disciplined over keeps New Zealand quiet. Just a single taken early, with Young and Mitchell unable to find any gaps. India’s bowlers continue to squeeze, and NZ crawl to 33/2, still rebuilding after the early setbacks.
A slightly better over for New Zealand. Young finally finds the boundary with a controlled shot through the off side, then keeps the scoreboard ticking with a single. Mitchell remains watchful at the other end as NZ move to 58/2, slowly rebuilding after the early damage.
What a moment for India! Harshit Rana strikes again and Ravindra Jadeja produces a stunner. Young goes hard at a back-of-a-length delivery outside off, doesn’t keep it down, and Jadeja flies to his right at backward point to pull off a sharp, low catch. Young departs for a well-made 30, and New Zealand lose a crucial wicket just as they were rebuilding. India tighten their grip on the decider.
Another tight over from India keeps New Zealand in check. Mitchell and Phillips manage to rotate strike with a few singles, but there’s no release shot. NZ move cautiously to 75/3, still under pressure as India continue to control the tempo in the middle overs.
Daryl Mitchell breaks a 28-ball boundary drought for New Zealand, flicking Kuldeep Yadav past the short fine leg fielder. In the process, the Kiwi batter gets to yet another fifty. It's a fourth ODI half-century in a row for Mitchell, who is enjoying quite a spectacular run of form.
It's an interesting passage of play. Mitchell is batting assuredly, and building a steady partnership with Glenn Phillips. But India are not letting them run away with the game, as the run rate is still under five an over. Mohammed Siraj, in particular, has been really economical, only conceding 18 off his first six overs.
Mitchell and Phillips have broken the shackles. They have elevated the run rate to more than five and a half, and that too without taking undue risks. Phillips crosses the fifty-run mark along the way, while Mitchell is nearing a well-deserved hundred. India and Shubman Gill have some thinking to do now.
Hundred for Daryl Mitchell! His superlative display in the 50-over format continues as the 34-year-old cracks his third century in four innings. Him and Glenn Phillips are in top gear now and they have set the perfect launchpad for the rest of the middle-order in the death overs.
Glenn Phillips gets to his century off just 83 balls, bettering his partner Daryl Mitchell in terms of strike rate. India eventually dismiss both, with Arshdeep Singh getting rid of Phillips and Mohammed Siraj seeing the back of Mitchell. Much-needed breakthroughs for the hosts, though the damage has arguably already been done with the 219-run stand.
New Zealand lose a bunch of wickets in the quest for quick runs at the death. Their captain Michael Bracewell stays unbeaten on 28 off 18, however, to take his side to a challenging 337-run total. The Black Caps would be pleased with this score, and it would take some chasing from the Indians to get there. Will chase-master Virat Kohli come to the party? We shall find out soon.
Rohit Sharma gets India off to a positive start with a silken boundary off the very first ball of the innings. Kyle Jamieson, the bowler, responds well with five dot balls after that. Captain Shubman Gill at the non-striker's end and India look to chase down a daunting 338-run target.
After getting dropped and hitting a four off the next ball, Rohit Sharma loses his duel to Zak Foulkes, caught at mid on for 11. But that brings another superstar Virat Kohli to the crease, amid deafening roars from the crowd. The 'King' responds with a majestic pull for six over the deep midwicket boundary. We have a contest on our hands.
Virat Kohli is playing vintage cricket, unfurling his trademark cover drives and flicks to get the crowd on its feet. But his task is made harder by losing top-order partners in a hurry. Shubman Gill (23) is cleaned up by a Kyle Jamieson nip-backer, while Shreyas Iyer (3) mistimes a flat-batted shot straight to mid on. KL Rahul has since joined Kohli, and the two senior pros would no doubt be looking to stitch a partnership together.
Soft dismissal! KL Rahul falls prey to a Jayden Lennox delivery that seems to grip the surface and turn away. The India batting mainstay can only lob it to cover, and India lose their fourth wicket. Nitish Reddy walks out to bat and faces a big test: can he milk the singles with Kohli before cutting loose as is his wont?
Kohli (59 not out) gets his second fifty of the series, and his 17th overall against New Zealand. As long as he is there in the middle, India will believe they can chase this down. Nitish Reddy (35 not out) has settled in too and is giving the chase master good company.
Nitish Reddy gets to his maiden ODI fifty but falls soon after! The 22-year-old all-rounder is crestfallen as he hits a Kristian Clarke delivery straight to Will Young at short midwicket. The 88-run partnership is broken and Ravindra Jadeja joins Kohli in the middle. All hinges on this pair now.
Ravindra Jadeja perishes for 12 in an attempted big shot over deep midwicket, and India are really staring down the barrel now. Harshit Rana joins Kohli and is struggling to get the ball away for singles. The senior pro is thus left to do all the heavy lifting. Can the chase master pull off a miracle?
It has arrived. Yet another Virat Kohli hundred in a chase comes up, off 91 balls. Nothing seems to deter this man when a target is in sight. Recognised batters have come and gone, the asking rate is nearing 11 and Harshit Rana, known more for his bowling, is at the other end. But the chase master rolls on, ever-vigorous. The job is not nearly done, however as India need 98 more runs off 9 overs.
Is that the match? After a magical period which featured Harshit Rana's maverick fifty and some sublime hitting, Virat Kohli is the ninth Indian batter to fall. Rana's dismissal was followed by that of Mohammed Siraj, and with Kuldeep Yadav at the other end, Kohli was forced to go for the big ones constantly. He is dismissed on a superlative 124 in that pursuit. New Zealand now on the verge of victory.
Indeed, with Kohli go India's hopes. Glenn Phillips comes up with a direct hit at the striker's end to run Kuldeep Yadav out. India are bowled out for 296 and New Zealand clinch a 41-run win that hands them the series 2-1. The Black Caps have followed up their Test triumph last year with a maiden ODI series victory now, and will be dangerous contenders in the T20I series to follow too.
Here's what India captain Shubman Gill had to say after the disappointing series defeat:
"After the first game, coming here 1-1, the way we played was disappointing. Lot of areas need improving. Virat bhai's batting, Harshit's batting have been pluses. Fast bowlers have done well. Keeping World Cup in mind and where it will be, we want to give Nitish (Reddy) opportunities."
With that, we conclude our coverage of the India vs New Zealand ODI series. We will be back with live updates from the T20I leg, starting January 21. Until then, goodbye!
