Marseille and Liverpool have played each other six times across all competitions. Liveprool have won three matches compared to two wins for Marseille, while one game ended as a draw. The last time these two sides met was in the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League. Liverpool won the away leg 2-1 before sealing a 1-0 win at Anfield.
Referee Slavko Vincic blows his whistle, and tonight's match gets underway with the home side getting the ball rolling. The Velodrome is packed to the hilt as Liverpool will face a tough test against Marseille tonight. Stay tuned!
First sight of goal for Liverpool. It comes from a good delivery by Salah from the corner, and Gomez jumped high to head it goalwards. However, it goes wide of the left post and does not trouble Rulli.
A brilliant early chance for Liverpool to take the lead, but Mac Allister smashes his effort just wide of the post. Third shot of the night from the visitors, but they are yet to test Rulli. The Reds are on the ascendancy though, and keep up the pressure on Marseille's box.
Liverpool's attacking intensity bears fruit as Ekitike puts them ahead!! Or did he?! Liverpool's celebrations are cut short immediately as VAR rules the goal out for offside during build-up. We are back to deadlock! Positive from Liverpool, though, as the link-up between Salah and Szoboszlai was sublime, even though it did not count for much.
Much better from the home side, with Gouiri bringing out a nice save from Alisson from a set-piece situation. This is the first shot on target we have seen at the Velodrome tonight, with chances at a premium at either end.
One of the best chances we have seen so far, and it falls to Salah. The Liverpool forward gets at the end of a cross from Frimpong and tries to beat Rulli, but his shot goes just over the crossbar and behind.
Late drama!! There's a huge penalty shout from the Liverpool players after Gravenberch goes down in the box after a coming together with Balerdi. Slavko Vincic consults with VAR, and ultimately decides that it wasn't a penalty. Meanwhile, there will be two added minutes.
Szoboszlai with the magic to put Liverpool ahead right before the break!! The Hungarian steps up to take a free-kick 25 yards from goal, and he catches out Rulli with a brilliant curling effort that finds the back of the net!
What a way to end the half for the visitors. Liverpool did have the best chances, with Salah coming close. However, it was Szboszlai's terrific free-kick that broke the deadlock in what has been a cagey first half in Marseille.
The referee blows his whistle, and Liverpool get the second half underway one goal to the good. No changes for either side as far as I can see, but there needs to be a change in the intensity from both teams after a really muted first half.
Greenwood, the former Manchester United forward, almost punishes Liverpool with a thunderous strike from distance. However, Alisson is up to the task and makes a good save to parry it behind for a corner. The shot looked destined for the bottom corner!!
Liverpool are growing into the game, and Ekitike rattles the post with a shot from the edge of the box after a brilliant through ball from Szoboszlai. Marseille break at the other end, and Traore sees his effort from outside the box fly just over the bar. End-to-end stuff at the Velodrome.
With Liverpool growing on the attack, and Wirtz even bringing out a save from Rulli, Marseille make a triple change. Aubameyang replaces Gouiri, and Igor Paixao comes on in place of Traore. Bilal Nadir also comes on, replacing Kondogbia. An attacking move from Roberto De Zerbi.
Frimpong, of all people, double Liverpool's lead, and it's surely won the game for the visitors tonight. Or was it an own goal from Rulli? Turns out it's the latter.
Moments after a good chance for Salah, Liverpool score the second as Frimpong's brilliant shot from an acute angle hits the goalkeeper and goes past the line. Heartbreak for the home fans!
With just over 10 minutes left to play in regulation time, Arne Slot makes a double change. Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo come on, and making way are Wirtz and Ekitike.
The fourth official holds up his board to indicate a minimum of three minutes to be added on at the end of regulation time. Can Liverpool sneak in a third goal before the final whistle?
Gakpo scores late for Liverpool with what will likely be the final kick of the match, and it ensures a comfortable win for the visitors. It was a good through ball from Gravenberch to create the chance, and Gakpo finishes from close range past Rulli.
It's all over at the Stade Velodrome, and Liverpool have secured all three points. After a cagey start, the visitors settled into their gameplay and secured what was ultimately a very comfortable win away from home.
