The time of the match between Daniil Medvedev and Learner Tien has updated to 12:45 PM IST.
The match is underway and 20-year-old Tien makes a bright start, breaking Medvedev's service straight away to take a 2-0 lead in the first set. Remember that Tien had knocked the Russian out in Australian Open 2025's second round, and the 11th seed would want revenge today.
The early serve break sets the tone for Learner Tien, who claims the first set 6-4 to unsettle Daniil Medvedev early on in this encounter. The Russian is not the worst when it comes to fightbacks, however, and a stern response can be expected from him.
What a ruthless display from Tien! He leaves Medvedev harried, and at sixes and sevens as he goes about retrieving balls, only to see more winners landing left right and centre. The 20-year-old American bagels the Russian to go up two sets (6-4, 6-0). Can the 11th seed still mount a fightback?
Well, well. Daniil Medvedev snaps his horror run, at least for now, by finally winning a game after losing 11 consecutive ones. He then breaks Tien's service for good measure, and holds again to cut the deficit to 3-4 in the third set. The Russian still has a long way to go, but it's a start, and has got the crowd behind him.
Alas, the Medvedev comeback is short-lived as Learner Tien regains his rhythm. The youngster holds and breaks the Russian back to take the third set 6-3 and sail into the quarters! He thus becomes the youngest player to enter the last-eight stage of the season-opening Grand Slam since 2015. As for Medvedev, it's curtains after an evening he would want to forget.
In the quarter-finals, Learner Tien faces third seed Alexander Zverev, who won his round of 16 match against Francisco Cerundolo 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 at the John Cain Arena earlier. The match will be played on Tuesday (January 27) at the Rod Laver Arena.
